New York has a reputation as a late city, which is true and beside the point. The version of it that most visitors never see runs from about six to nine in the morning, when the streets belong to delivery vans, dog walkers and people who are extremely serious about coffee.
Jet lag is an asset here
Arriving from Europe means waking at five whether you want to or not. Stop fighting it. Those four extra hours are the best four hours of the day in Manhattan, and they are free.
The bridge, at the right time
Walk the Brooklyn Bridge from the Brooklyn side at sunrise. You get the skyline in front of you rather than behind you, the light comes over the East River, and the pedestrian deck is nearly empty. By nine it is a slow-moving crowd; at six-thirty it is a photograph.
Every famous view in New York has an hour when it belongs to about eleven people. Find that hour.
Breakfast is the meal to spend on
Bagels before eight, from somewhere with a line of people in work clothes. Then a proper diner counter, or one of the bakeries that open at seven and sell out by ten. Reserve dinner budget for one good meal and put the rest into breakfasts, which in New York are consistently excellent and consistently affordable.
The parks before the parks fill
- Central Park north of 96th, which is hilly, wooded and almost always quiet.
- Prospect Park at seven, when it is entirely runners and parakeets.
- The High Line at opening, which is a completely different experience to the High Line at noon.
- Brooklyn Bridge Park, for the skyline and the coffee at the Fulton Ferry end.
What to do with the afternoon
Sleep, honestly. A short afternoon rest is what makes the early start sustainable across four or five days, and it converts you into someone who can also enjoy a nine-thirty dinner reservation.
The museums are the other answer. The Met stays open late two nights a week, the Frick is small enough to do properly in ninety minutes, and the Tenement Museum tours are worth booking in advance — they are the best short history lesson in the city.
Then go out. New York does not need help being New York after dark. It just needs you to have banked the morning first.
